I recently decided that unless I force myself to buckle down and release finished tracks on a regular basis I’ll just continue to have hundreds of unfinished tracks in my library (yeah, there are lots of them). My plan now is to release one song per week, offered up to you as a podcast.

I was inspired by a post on createdigitalmusic.com about how an artists typically group songs and release them in album format, due to the fact that up until recently albums were the only way to reasonably release music. After all, releasing a record after every song was written would cost too much to produce, distribute, market, etc. Now, however, production is done in the bedroom in many cases, distribution is free, and marketing can be as easy as getting a good track some connected people’s ears who can then spread the word (ok, that part still isn’t easy, but easier). So now the artist can release their songs in any format that fits them, whether it be an album, an occasional release, a weekly podcast, whatever.

My first mission is to figure out how to podcast in the first place. Since this blog is built on Wordpress I just needed to install a plugin called Podpress and follow their instructions. I have a song attached to this post so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the plugin will make the song available as a podcast. Stay tuned, because there’s a poostorm of music about to slap you across the face and if you’re not careful you might get hurt.

The night started out with a PBR/burrito fueled electro-jam. Coming from years of playing guitar in blues and jam bands improv jams are nothing new to me, but electronic improving definitely is. I must say that it is damn fun. Later on in the night super-MC’s Geometree and Harlem L’s took to the mic to add their freestyle rhymes.

All in all a damn good time, and rumor has it there’s going to be another show coming up so stay tuned.

So it looks like djchima.com isn’t the only place you can play drum machines online. I came across this drum machine via Crate Kings this morning. Literally AS I was playing around with it the person next to me was playing a Daft Punk drum machine that he had just discovered. They’re both a lot of fun, but let’s not forget who built one of these over a year ago

Granted, this is reminding me that it’s time for me to update the drum sounds on mine

Ok, so I guess I got a little ahead of myself in my last post. Don’t get me wrong, I think a lot of the new features (looper, vocoder, workflow improvements) are awesome. I just got in a little over my head with the Beta version. I can’t say I wasn’t warned, Peter Kirn from Createdigitalmusic.com told me exactly what to expect months ago. Immediately after using it I started running into problems with MIDI mapping – a big part of my setup. Then there were a few times that the program randomly locked up. There were also some minor little problems that happened only occasionally, but combined it was enough to frustrate me.

I guess that’s why the program is still in Beta. It’s just not practical to make music on the software if you don’t know when it will actually work the way you want. Incidentally, a public Beta version was just released, allowing anyone with a version of Ableton 7 to try out Ableton 8 beta. I wonder if this means that they solved a lot of the major problems. I’m not going to bother finding out this time around.
